Odyssey Triple Track - Line It Up and In
Lines and shapes on a putter are nothing new but when you realise that the direction the face is pointing at impact on a putt relates to 92% of its starting direction you can see why every company is experimenting and exploring concepts. For Odyssey it’s also something to run hand in hand with engineering that helps the stroke or stroke lab as they call it. See the Stroke Lab range here
How did Triple Track come about?
The stroke lab idea isn’t in itself new but older ways of rebalancing often had payoffs which created a lack of feel and issues of how to work it with different head shapes and balances. Stroke Lab, and similar concepts such as the BGT and Freq Filtered shafts, have shown marked improvements in the reliability of stroke mechanics so its how do you improve from there. With the growing trend for more and more players lining the ball up with the start line and balls pre-printed to help the guys at Odyssey had a 5 minute epiphany and with some tape and sharpies extended to print from the ERC soft ball on to some head designs
What they found
The initial data was pretty good with a 29% improvement in the face aim but astounding when its also garnered a 20% improvement on centered contact with a ball that wasn’t lined up and 106% improvement using a lined up ball! As with drives a centered contact is the overriding impact factor hence why if you look to some of the top putters such as Justin Rose or Steve Stricker you’ll see the same wear marks that they get on irons. All in all got to be good with face technology for feel and roll, shaft and head tech to get control of stroke but be aware at his peak Tiger Woods aimed 3-6* right of his intended start line yet was with 0.2* at impact. Head design will have a huge influence on where you aim and this needs to be matched to your tendencies and skills so hence why its isn’t a blanket silver bullet for all golfers but when fitted correctly is a great help.
